“Let Tyrants Shake” is my first complete string quartet. The compositional point of departure is William Billings’ tune “Chester,” the runaway hit of the American Revolutionary War. Splendidly recorded in July 2023 by the Benda Quartet in the Czech Republic, it will appear in the next album of Navona Recording’s series Quadrants, to be released in March. After a short introduction that presents this vigorous song against tyranny, four movements explore varied concepts associated with the struggle for freedom. Each also features one of the instruments in turn. Recorded in surround sound and with a great video, this release will delight and inspire.
